Monday morning quarterbacking: self defense in the news

08 September 2016 - 09:47 AM

Burk keeps posting these hypothetical shoot/no-shoot situations as thought exercises. In the same vein, here's a thing that actually happened: http://www.nbcnewyor...FlowTwt_NYBrand

The facts as I understand them from the news report:

- Coked Up Guy breaks into apartment and proceeds to sexually assault woman.

- Woman calls for husband, woman's cousin attempts to fight off Coked Up Guy.

- Coked up guy flees to elevator.

- Husband arrives, woman points out attacker.

- Husband pursues Coked Up Guy with a tire iron.

- A fight ensues; Husband has a tire iron, Coked Up Guy is whipping Husband with a belt.

- The "tire iron vs belt" fight goes exactly as everyone figured it would.

- Husband is charged with manslaughter.

Charges were dropped, presumably because prosecuting this guy would be a PR nightmare and finding a jury to convict him would be a job. BUT do you think he committed a crime?

Replace "Coke" with "Meth," "tire iron" with "gun," "apartment" with "house," and "elevator" with "his truck" and this is an entirely believable Oklahoma story so it's worth considering.

can I shoot slugs and buckshot through a light modified choke

10 August 2016 - 03:59 PM

The Internet is awash with conflicting information. Let's settle this once and for all, because people here have probably actually tried it.

I've shot 00 buck through Modified and Full chokes without asploding the gun, but it wasn't many rounds and maybe I just got lucky.

The Law of Self Defense by Andrew Branca

19 July 2016 - 06:41 AM

Yesterday I decided that I'd had it with Internet forum threads full of idiots with Wikipedia law degrees echoing other idiots with Wikipedia law degrees asking questions like "if I put aftermarket sights on my carry gun, will the EVIL PROSECUTOR bend me over and take me to brown town?" I'd heard of The Law of Self Defense from a few different places, so yesterday I got the Kindle version off Amazon for $25. It's a book about the legal aspects of self-defense shootings written by a lawyer who actually has experience with cases involving legit self-defense shootings. I can't believe I've been carrying for years and read this yet.

I'm like 2 chapters in and it's pretty good so far.

Josh Smash

I bought some brass from Josh Smash a couple days ago. It is really good brass.

10/10 would buy brass (and conceivably other non-brass items) again.

Balls Deep Tackle

Anyone heard of these guys? Apparently they're based out of Tulsa. http://www.ballsdeeptackle.com/

My fishing stuff has sat disused for years but if someone buys me these I might kit up.
